Capital in the Twenty-First Century (Part One)

When thinking about social and economic issues, inequality is considered, by default, a problem to be solved. However, inequalities are widespread throughout natural systems as well, and if it serves the common good, one might argue against efforts to overcome it. Historically, the negative perception of inequality has defined social movements starting from XIX century. In discussing Piketty’s influential book we will therefore be focusing on the issue of equality from the historical perspective, trying to understand its dynamics, sources, driving factors, outcomes and potential ways to overcome it, if necessary. We will also make an effort to draw analogies between natural and social inequalities, getting inspiration from the previous book that we have discussed in our reading club, The Brain from Inside Out (Buzsaki 2021). This meeting will be limited to the discussion of the first part of the book concerning income and capital.
